Gabor: Beyond the age of 40, knife throwing becomes erratic. That's why I recruit on bridges. I like to help.

Adele is disappointed romantically to the point of giving up, standing on a bridge with her toes dangling off the parapet. Gabor is a knife thrower looking for a new target. If Adele didn't have bad luck, she'd have no luck at all. The same can be said for Gabor. But as two strangers who meet by chance and start working together, somehow their fortunes change for the better. It seems the cosmic equivalent of two wrongs making a right. But can they embrace this reversal of fortune or will they revert to old habits? Vanessa Paradis' Adele is fickle but sweet, eager to return a smile and read promises of 'forever' into a flirtatious glance. Daniel Auteuil's Gabor tries to project weary cynicism and a belief that what he and Adele have stumbled upon must be too good to last; his wry comments on Adele's impulsivity when it comes to men belie his fragile hope that their luck will stick.

Of course, in a film about performers, the scenes of them practicing their art become a highlight. Adele quite literally fell into this profession and has no idea what to expect when knives start hurtling towards her, but she takes direction well and allows Gabor to bandage her occasional nicks (occupational hazard) with a bemused smile. Gabor is seasoned, but you suspect he has had some rough patches where things went awry. Each knife-throwing scene is different, from their first attempt in a parking garage to Gabor promising increasingly risky stage variations (blind! the Wheel of Death!) to keep the audience's attention. The scenes are intensely erotic, as Gabor and Adele feel the power of their risk-taking enthrall the audience, while they simultaneously feel their own confidence build and the reciprocal trust between them flourish. They develop a mind meld with which they can communicate telepathically, eventually across miles. During a passionate argument, they both realize they want nothing more in that exact moment than the potent thrill they both feed off of when existence is balanced on the edge (or rather the tip) of Gabor's knives. The sound design brings us into the action, as the knives whiz past and bite into the surface Adele stands against while she gasps in ecstasy.

If this all sounds a bit too kinky or the black and white cinematography suggests pretention, fear not. There are delicious moments of serendipity, playfulness, and irony, including one of my favorite musical cues in all of film. (I'll not spoil the song, but it happens when Adele boards a lifeboat with a new love interest and leaves Gabor in the lurch. Let's just say it doesn't take long for her to regret her decision.) Ultimately, Gabor and Adele rarely touch physically but there's no room for doubt they are each other's Person. And watching them discover that truth is one of the delights of cinema.

You on the other hand were far from the luxuries your classmates lived in, just someone trying to survive with the high school scholarship you received from the government.

You had always wondered why she didn't target you who were obviously a soft prey instead of one of the many rich girls. You wondered for a year until you finally realized the answer.

It was when you almost got yourself into trouble with her. She threatened you that you would be her next victim and you boldly declared that she wouldn't even though you weren't completely certain of your reasoning.

In short, the bully, Im Seonmi, was just a petty child who didn't want to see other kids happy from what she couldn't have. The warmth from their parents, the acknowledgment they received, and the support that they needed.

It was almost just as simple as that, that you noticed how this bully was actually smart and a lonely bitch, made her fall for you. She knew what she was getting herself into and paid no mind to what it might lead to. Even if she couldn't put the feelings she felt in a word, she still craved for you. To have you.

The friendship between you two bloomed and now she was ready to squeeze her way into your school life, uni life, career life, and even your marriage life. You would not notice how she had steered your life for forty years until it was too late.

I know I'm mostly shouting into the void/preaching to the choir here, but for my fellow non-Indigenous aussies here, today is a very good day to remember we live on stolen land, and to pay the rent, especially if (like me) you can't make it out to a protest.

important to remember, though, that Pay the Rent isn't a registered charity. if you need somewhere tax deductible, consider donating to The Dhadjowa Foundation, Seed, the Indigenous Literacy Foundation, Black Rainbow (when it's back online), Sisters Inside, or many others. in one of my jobs, I see the Aboriginal Legal Service's work for mob grappling with the justice system, so I'd particularly advocate for them; there's a service in every state, and NATSILS has a list with links to each of them.

and for people on non-aus stolen land - be that the Americas, Aotearoa, the Pacific, or anywhere else - now's as good a time as any to think about legacies of colonialism, and how you can try to make a difference. find your local charities and organisations. protest. donate money, time, or skills. this always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land. ✊
